Rescue Me ID: 11-09-21-00015Hunter (male)

Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hunter is a 7 1/2-year-old, healthy Rhodesian Ridgeback/Red Bone Coonhound mix. Rescued from a Georgia kill shelter after Hurricane Katrina, he was adopted 5 1/2 years ago by a couple in Minneapolis and is currently in foster care with them. Hunter's owners just had a baby 6 weeks ago and need to find a new home for him before their new little one starts crawling. They learned that Hunter is too anxious to live with small children; last summer while Hunter was sleeping, a young toddler crawled on him and Hunter startled, causing a single reactionary bite on the girl. By no means is he purposively aggressive towards children, he is just ... (Read More)extremely anxious around the unpredictability that inherently comes with them. He LOVES adults and older children and looks to humans to be his pack leader. He will greet you every day when you return home with the largest dog smile one has seen and even will add a grunt because he is so happy to see you! He will benefit from a friendly, patient, calm and confident leader. Truly a 'man's best friend,' he loves being where the people are and would thrive living alongside a single adult or an adult couple. Any children regularly around him should be at least 8 years old, simply because they are more predictable and are less likely to take him by surprise. Hunter is very well house trained and can be left alone in the house for up to 10 or 11 hours - he has never had an accident in the house while living with his current owners. He strongly dislikes being kenneled, and there really is no need to kennel him, as he's extremely mellow inside. He barks appropriately at strangers and unknown people in the front yard. Hunter is an excellent house dog and is very calm when inside. Hunter loves his daily walks. His new owner should be able to provide him with at least a short walk each day. He walks very well with a Gentle Leader and only an occasional verbal reminder to stay by your side. He has had two basic obedience classes and is very food motivated, so further training with his new owner would be fun for both of them! Hunter would appreciate a fenced yard, or will need to be on a tether line while outside, as his hound nose likes to explore. Hunter used to love going to the dog park and playing with other dogs, but he has just become too anxious with them and should not be with other dogs. Hunter will make an excellent companion, making you smile with his eagerness and quirks, and will bring a ton of joy to the lucky person welcoming him into their life. He is guaranteed to warm your heart with his love, affectionate and need to be near and with you. The current owners are truly heartbroken that they cannot keep Hunter as a part of their family and are searching for the right person/people who are ready to welcome Hunter into their life. (Less)
